Help Choosing A Metal Detector
As avid metal detectorists ourselves, we’re often asked to name the best metal detector in the UK or globally. And if you read metal detecting forums, you’ll see the question is hotly debated! But here at Joan Allen, we understand that the best metal detector is the one that’s right for your needs as a seeker.
Let’s help you choose the right metal detector the first time around.
Before you start, it’s important to consider these three things. Where will you be detecting? What are you interested in finding? And, what is your budget?
Next, move on to these additional considerations to help you narrow down your search:
Are you looking for an all-purpose metal detector?
If you want a metal detector that:
- Is suitable on all ground conditions including beach & land
- Will detect everything from coins and jewellery to relics
- Can discriminate against unwanted metals such as iron nails
- Is user-friendly & lightweight
Then, these metal detectors could be good options for you:
£100 - £200 - Minelab Go find 11, Minelab Go find 22, Minelab Go find 44, Fisher F11, Quest X5
£200 - £300 - Minelab Go Find 66, Minelab Vanquish 340, Fisher F22, Fisher F44, Minelab Vanquish 440, Quest X10 PRO,
£300 - £400 - Minelab Vanquish 540, Nokta Makro Simplex, Quest Q30+, Vanquish 540 standard pack.
£400 - £500 - Simplex+, Vanquish 540 Pro Pack,
£500 - £600 - Fisher F19, Nokta Makro Legend WHP
Are you looking for the ultimate all-purpose detector that can discriminate between different materials?
Some all-purpose metal detectors are tailored to the specific needs of the coin, relic or jewellery hunting enthusiast or professional. These metal detectors offer superior performance and discrimination:
Minelab Equinox 800
Minelab CTX 3030
Are you looking for a highly sensitive, deep penetrating, lightweight, easy to use, exceptional discriminating and pinpointing metal detector?
If so, consider these options:
Minelab Vanquish 540 Pro Pack
Minelab Equinox 600
Minelab Gold Monster 1000
Are you looking for an underwater metal detector?
Most metal detector coils are waterproof and can be used in shallow water but if you would like to go diving or submerge the detector in the surf consider:
Minelab Excalibur II
Fisher CZ-21
Scuna Tecotr pro - Handheld machine
Are you metal detecting for larger treasures or hoards buried extremely deep?
Consider these options:
Minelab GPX 5000
Minelab GPX 6000
Minelab GPZ 7000
Full OKM range found here:
Are you metal detecting for gold?
Gold metal detectors have special features. If you are searching for gold, you will need a higher frequency detector because these are most sensitive. These detectors are often used by professional metal detectorists who require the best of the best.
Consider these extra sensitive metal detectors for your gold hunting:
Minelab GPX 5000
Minelab GPX 6000

UK Metal Detector Laws
The Treasure Act:
Any metallic object, other than a coin, provided that at least 10 per cent by weight of metal is precious metal (that is, gold or silver) and that it is at least 300 years old when found. If the object is of prehistoric date it will be Treasure provided any part of it is a precious metal.
Any group of two or more metallic objects of any composition of prehistoric date* that comes from the same find (*see note 3 below)
Two or more coins from the same find provided they are at least 300 years old when found and contain 10% gold or silver (if the coins contain less than 10 percent of gold or silver there must be at least ten of them). Only the following groups of coins will normally be regarded as coming from the same find:
- hoards that have been deliberately hidden
- smaller groups of coins, such as the contents of purses, that may have been dropped or lost
- votive or ritual deposits.
Any object, whatever it is made of, that is found in the same place as or had previously been together with, another object that is Treasure.
Any object that would previously have been treasure trove, but does not fall within the specific categories given above. Only objects that are less than 300 years old, that are made substantially of gold or silver, that have been deliberately hidden with the intention of recovery and whose owners or heirs are unknown will come into this category.
Please Note:
- An object or coin is part of the 'same find' as another object or coin if it is found in the same place as, or had previously been together with, the other object. Finds may have become scattered since they were originally deposited in the ground.
- Single coins will not be a treasure, unless they are found in association with objects that are a treasure, or unless there is exceptionally strong evidence that they were buried with the intention of recovery. Section 3 (2) of the Act defines the term 'coin' as including any metal token that was, or can reasonably be assumed to have been, used or intended for use as or instead of money. This definition only includes coins and tokens made after the introduction of the first coinage into this country during the Iron Age period and excludes objects made earlier such as iron currency bars. Jettons or reckoning counters are also excluded from this definition.
- 'of prehistoric date' means dating from the Iron Age or any earlier period
